Powering Sacramento: How SMUD and SACC Are Uplifting AAPI Communities

Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) has been serving the people of Sacramento and surrounding areas for more than 75 years. As a community-owned, not-for-profit electric service, they work to provide for and give back to the community. SMUD does this in numerous ways – by sponsoring local organizations, offering workshops and educational resources, working to beautify neighborhoods, and designating nature reserves for people to explore.

Throughout their various efforts, SMUD maintains a social responsibility to the communities they serve and people within them. Aside from providing more than 1.5 million families and businesses with sustainable electricity, SMUD has a set a goal of eliminating 100% of their carbon emissions from their power supply by 2030. The goal is to keep Sacramento beautiful and safe for generations to come.

While their team works on large scale projects like sustainable energy, they have also provided $3 million to local nonprofits and $48 million in contracts to local small businesses in the last year. SMUD is continuing their support of small businesses this May during AAPI Heritage Month, as the presenting sponsor of the SACC’s AAPI Night Market.

The AAPI Night Market is a celebration of the Sacramento region’s culturally rich AAPI community. With more than 40 vendors, the event features a diverse array of AAPI chefs, creators, performers, and musical artists. Food and retail vendors will offer a variety of products, and a full entertainment lineup will include cultural performances and musical artists.

SMUD’s role in the night market is only the latest update in their long history with the SACC. For several years, SMUD has sponsored many Chamber networking events and programs. Their involvement extends to the CalAsian Foundation, a sister organization of SACC, where SMUD supports the Catalyst Leadership Program, a workforce development program for budding leaders in the Sacramento region. With a shared commitment to building sustainable communities, SMUD has been a longtime partner and supporter of the Chamber’s inclusive economic development efforts.

As the SACC celebrates its 30th anniversary in 2023, we are proud to have SMUD’s continued support and powering our second ever AAPI Night Market! To attend the event, tickets are available at aapinightmarket.com, or by clicking here.
