How David Lowe Showcases Diverse Communities at PBS KVIE

The Sacramento region is rich in diversity. News organizations like PBS KVIE aim to showcase these diverse communities and highlight the businesses and people who make them so vibrant. David Lowe, the President & General Manager at PBS KVIE, knows that diverse populations in our region have powerful stories to tell. As a Vice Chair on our Board of Directors, David brings wisdom to the Chamber’s work while also ensuring AAPI stories are shared with our community.

David chatted with us about his work and his lifelong career in communication. Read a brief Q&A below.


David Lowe

Q: Tell me more about your role at PBS KVIE and what drives you.

A: I’m the president and general manager of the PBS television station that serves the Sacramento-Stockton-Modesto television market, the 20th largest in the country. Every PBS station in the country is an independent non-commercial organization designed to provide the best of the national PBS programming as well as reflect the community we serve back to itself by showing where it’s been, where it is, and where it might be going.

I began my career in written communication, first as a technical writer and then to marketing communications. I’m a communicator at heart.

Q: What kind of impact do you hope to make in the Sacramento region’s diverse communities?

A: PBS KVIE has a long history of showcasing the diverse communities we serve through our programming. My predecessor Dr. David Hosley was instrumental in producing a number of programs that otherwise might not exist if it weren’t for him. As I look back at them, the catalogue of programs – still available for free to everyone and now being streamed – is incredible.

The story of our part of California is rich in its diversity. When we combine our local productions that focus on diversity along with the national PBS programming, the impact is incredible. My hope is that we continue to be seen as one of the greatest free resources available for understanding and showcasing diverse communities.

Q: What is some key advice that has helped you throughout your career?

A: If you think you’re communicating enough, you aren’t. And if it seems that people are understanding what you’re saying, they probably are only at the beginning; keep going. Repetition never makes the prayer go stale.
