Mariah Taloa is on a mission: creating the perfect cultural fusion of pastries that represent her Samoan and Filipino American heritage. Her small business, Taloa’s Bakery, officially began in 2020. With mouth-watering menu items like Filimoas and Ube Pani Popo, the bakery owner shares her heritage with customers in a delicious way.

“Our mission is to represent both cultures and bring our customers the best of both islands,” Mariah said. “Our vision is to spread awareness of Samoan pastries in the mainstream and hope to manufacture our products worldwide.”

With a global vision, this small business is already spreading its delicious goodness and cultural fusion to several areas across California. Taloa’s Bakery has a growing presence in the Bay Area, Central Valley, and Sacramento region. Through local events, pop-ups, and festivals, the bakery is expanding its reach with every opportunity available. The goal for 2022 is to add the element of a food truck, but the growth doesn’t stop there.

“We hand make all of our products with a team of two,” Mariah explained. “We are hoping to expand and hire as we obtain our food truck and store front.”

As a pastry chef, Mariah has a sweet and savory background, previously working as a Pastry Lead and Line Cook at San Francisco’s Slanted Door, Out the Door, and Ici Ice Cream in Berkeley. Now, she’s bringing her talents to Sacramento with her own specialized cuisine.

Like so many small business owners, Mariah faced innumerable challenges due to the impacts of the pandemic, which continue to create new and unrelenting obstacles to push through. Taloa’s Bakery perseveres with the encouragement of the community and customers.

“Everywhere we go, we receive an overwhelming amount of support,” Mariah said. “It really pushed us to stay motivated even when we have our rough moments.”
