Nothing Says “Seasonal Business” Like Snowball Ice

Many small businesses and side hustles can be classified as “seasonal,” but nothing is truly as seasonal as the ice business – for obvious reasons. Snowball Ice is a small ice manufacturing company based in Sacramento. On top of the pre-existing difficulties of running a small business, the seasonal element of the ice industry presents an interesting challenge.

Susanna Chang.

“Winter is a slow time for us and the ice demand is low,” said Susanna Chung, the Managing Member of Snowball Ice. “I am hoping this summer will bring us a lot of work to fulfill our promise to our team.  All we need is warmer weather for people to think about ice!”

This year will be Snowball Ice’s first summer in business, as they became fully operational in September 2022. Their team produces cubed ice in 5-pound and 16-pound bags and delivers them in bulk to businesses, organizations, and events. Even before starting the business, the team prepared for potential obstacles by investing in reliable and scalable equipment and selecting a premium water filtration and softening system.

“Although the business model appears to be simple, starting a business took much more understanding, resources, and time than we anticipated,” Susanna said. “But who needs ice? That’s everyone! So, we ran with it.”

Even with the challenges of a seasonal business like Snowball Ice, Susanna describes running a business as an opportunity not only for herself, but for her team.

“I’m blessed that after my retirement, I am still physically and mentally fit to jump start a business,” she said. “I get satisfaction from extending my support to someone and helping them grow and fulfill their dreams. I love sharing what I know. It takes a village.”

A special part of the team and the business is their namesake. Snowball Ice was aptly named after Susanna’s beloved dog, Snowball, who she says melts her heart every day.

As warmer weather approaches, the team is ready to take on orders and keep Sacramento cool during the business’ first summer season. For Susanna, the busy season is something she’s ready to tackle.

“I’m just an ordinary person with a dream, and lucky enough to be able to pursue it.”
