Reimagine Sac: Meet South Sacramento’s Another Look Hair Salon

In South Sacramento, a business isn’t just a place where customers come and go — it’s a place where neighbors come to meet, learn, and grow together. Another Look Hair Salon sits along Mack Road with its doors wide open, waiting to greet those neighbors as they come in each day. The owners are Robert and Tracy Brown, a husband and wife who opened their full service salon and barbershop to provide haircare and a family friendly environment for folks in South Sac.

The couple’s business is a dream years in the making. Tracy went to beauty school and then worked in a salon built in her parents garage, while Robert worked at Kings and Queens Unisex Salon just off Florin Road after barber college.

“My wife and I always dreamed of owning our own business and working together,” Robert said. “About a year after saving every dime we could, we opened Another Look Hair Salon in South Sac. We didn’t have much money, but we had lots of grit and determination.”

Their love for their business was contagious. In May of 2023, the small business owners will celebrate 25 years serving South Sacramento’s community. In those 25 years, the business has been so successful that Robert and Tracy partnered with a group of salon owners and opened a beauty and barber college, called Mixed Institute of Cosmetology & Barber, on Florin Road not far from the salon.

“The beauty business has blessed our lives so much we decided to teach young kids everything we know in hopes of them finding the same happiness and success,” Robert said.

As their 25-year anniversary approaches, the business owners plan to remodel the barbershop in celebration of their upcoming milestone and to continue their business’ reputation as a place of togetherness.

“We consider Another Look Hair Salon a hub for our community,” Robert said. “It’s not only where we provide hair care services, but it’s where a lot of kids grew up; it’s where folks have started their own businesses; it’s where we learn about what’s going on.”

And there’s always plenty going on in South Sac. The burgeoning areas along Mack Road, Florin Road, and Stockton Boulevard are home to a growing number of small businesses and community-based organizations. The area is often stereotyped as unsafe or undesirable, but in realty, the diversity of the locality and the cultural influence of its residents has created a community where delicious food, local events, and new projects are easy to find. Robert hopes Another Look Hair Salon is just one example of a South Sacramento success story.

“We want other people eager to open their family business to look at us as an example of a successful business in the South Sacramento area,” Robert said.

From mouth-watering soul food to vibrant hand-painted murals, South Sac constantly showcases the rich diversity of all it has to offer. Small business owners like Robert and Tracey are just waiting for new neighbors to move in and new businesses to open their doors.

“In the community, it’s a place where we have meetings with the Mayor and Councilmembers, provided health screenings, given out movie tickets for premiers. It’s a place for young kids to come make some money and learn from the old folks,” Robert said. “It’s just Mack Road.”
